Cyprus nears Schengen accession despite political hurdles

Cyprus is moving closer to joining the Schengen Area after the European Commission confirmed the country is technically prepared for accession. Following years of preparation and the implementation of 120 technical recommendations regarding border controls, visa policies, and security database access, Nicosia received a positive evaluation in July.

Nicholas Ioannides, the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, stated on October 1 that all recommendations formulated by the Commission have been implemented. However, technical readiness does not guarantee entry, as accession requires a unanimous decision from the EU Council.

Political obstacles remain, specifically regarding security concerns raised by Austria and the Netherlands. These concerns center on the Green Line, which has divided the island since 1974, and the status of the British sovereign bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Because the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control across the entire line, some member states have expressed reservations about border security.
