Cyprus Nears Schengen Membership as EU Commission Prepares Evaluation Report

The European Commission will shortly present its assessment report on Cyprus' accession to the Schengen area, Commissioner for Migration Maghnus Bruener said after the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg. Bruener stressed that the timing and method of Cyprus' integration will be decided by the Council, not the Commission.

Cyprus aims to meet the full Schengen standards by the end of 2026. Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris noted that since 2004 the island has implemented core Schengen measures, addressed 120 Commission recommendations and expects the forthcoming evaluation to confirm its readiness. He highlighted the recent launch of the EU Entry/Exit System on 10 April 2026 as a key tool for external border management.

The Council also reviewed broader priorities such as digitising border procedures, strengthening external border resilience and enhancing internal security. Discussions touched on the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, drug‑trafficking strategies and upcoming EU Council deliberations on these issues.
