Cyprus officials pursue reunification talks following UN visit

Following a visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Cyprus, conditions have been set for a potential five-party conference to address the Cyprus dispute. The Republic of Cyprus and parties supporting a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation (BBF) solution have expressed cautious optimism regarding resuming talks based on previous negotiation frameworks.

During a ‘Solution Remembrance Day’ event, Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris, representing President Nikos Christodoulides, reaffirmed the government's commitment to achieving a comprehensive and sustainable solution. Fytiris emphasized that the effort is grounded in UN resolutions, international law, and European Union values, aiming to end the occupation and division of the island.

However, some critics, including retired General Phoivos Klokkaris, have expressed skepticism. Klokkaris argued that the optimism is unjustified, warning that previous negotiation frameworks could lead to a dysfunctional and divided state. He also criticized the lack of transparency regarding the contents of past negotiations, which he claims are known to Turkey and the United Kingdom but withheld from the Cypriot public.
