Cyprus Parliament faces data leak and foreign lobby controversy
The Cyprus House of Representatives is facing two distinct political crises. A significant data breach occurred during the publication of lawmakers' asset declarations, where confidential personal information belonging to spouses and minor children was accidentally released online. In response, 34 asset declarations were temporarily withdrawn, and Speaker Annita Dimitriu has ordered a formal investigation into how the legally protected data was exposed.
Simultaneously, political tension has risen regarding a new parliamentary cooperation group established to strengthen ties with Israel. The political party Volt Cyprus has criticized members of DISY, DIKO, and ELAM for their involvement with international organizations such as the Israel Allies Foundation and Transatlantic Friends of Israel. Volt has called for transparency regarding the funding and obligations of these groups, arguing that such institutionalized foreign lobbying could compromise the independence of the Republic of Cyprus's foreign policy.
