Cyprus House of Representatives asset declaration data leak
Overview
The Cyprus House of Representatives experienced a data breach during the publication of 2026 asset declarations for its members. While the House initially published wealth statements for 53 of 56 Members of Parliament, the process was interrupted when confidential personal information regarding spouses and minor children was inadvertently released online.
In response to the exposure of legally protected data, 34 asset declarations were temporarily withdrawn from the official website. Speaker of the House Annita Demetriou has ordered a formal investigation into the cause of the leak. Following the incident, the House republished the declarations, ensuring that only the legally required segments were made public.
The revised ‘Pothen Esches’ (asset declarations) were re-uploaded after the initial error included sensitive information not permitted for public disclosure, such as specific details submitted to the Tax Commissioner intended for internal audit purposes only. While the law requires officials to declare assets for themselves, spouses, and minor children, the public versions must exclude reconciliation statements and granular data used by tax authorities to verify wealth changes.
Observations regarding the data include discrepancies in how assets are recorded, such as varying inclusion of household items, and instances where real estate values appear as zero due to inheritance or donations. Among the published figures, Giorgos Papobiridis reported the highest net wealth at approximately €3.37 million, followed by Christiana Erotokritou with roughly €1.25 million and Foteini Tsiridou with approximately €997,000.
