Cyprus police detain five people during intensive night traffic checks

The Cyprus Police conducted coordinated night‑time patrols across the island, focusing on high‑risk urban areas. During the operation they stopped and checked 449 drivers and 106 passengers, carried out 41 property inspections, and performed 80 alcohol tests, which yielded no violations. Five individuals were arrested on charges including illegal possession of drugs, illegal possession of property and unlawful stay in the Republic of Cyprus. The checks also generated 300 traffic‑related complaints, 101 reports of speed‑limit violations, 12 investigations into traffic offences, and led to the seizure of seven vehicles. One driver tested positive in a preliminary drug test.

The police emphasized that the heightened presence aims to prevent serious crime, maintain public order and improve citizens’ sense of safety.
