Cyprus police crackdown persists through October

Overview

The island-wide policing campaign that began in April 2026 has intensified through night-time patrols, checkpoints, and targeted raids. Following intensive August operations, including the Europe-wide Roadpol campaign, police conducted widespread overnight preventive operations on 23 August. Police in Northern Cyprus arrested 22 irregular migrants following an unauthorized entry attempt at the Bafra coast. Organized patrols throughout the month resulted in numerous arrests for offenses including burglary, theft, drug possession, and driving under the influence.

Traffic enforcement remains a central focus. Nationwide night operations in mid-to-late October involved inspecting over 1,000 occupants and hundreds of vehicles, leading to hundreds of citations for speeding and alcohol-related offenses. Concurrently, a series of serious traffic accidents in Northern Cyprus, involving motorcycles and ATVs, resulted in multiple injuries and led to arrests of drivers suspected of driving under the influence in Lefkoşa and Girne.
