Cyprus Police launch nationwide distracted driving campaign

The Cyprus Police have launched a nationwide awareness and enforcement campaign targeting distracted driving, specifically the use of mobile phones or other objects while operating a vehicle. The campaign runs from Monday, August 24, through Sunday, August 30, 2026.

Traffic police will conduct road checks to penalize drivers found using handheld devices. Data from the 2023–2025 period indicates that distracted driving is a primary cause of severe and fatal accidents, accounting for 22.1% of road deaths and 29.4% of serious road injuries.

Violators face a €150 fine and the loss of 2 to 4 penalty points. If the offense is repeated within three years, the penalties double to a €300 fine and up to 8 penalty points.
