Cyprus police warn of phone‑app scams and fake traffic‑ticket messages
Cyprus police are investigating a fraud case in which a woman was convinced by a phone call to install a malicious application on her mobile device. The app allowed the caller to monitor her actions and prompted her to transfer money to an unknown recipient and to an account linked to the app, resulting in a loss of about €600.
Police also report a surge of deceptive messages sent via social‑media platforms and SMS that claim the recipient must pay alleged traffic‑ticket fines. The messages contain fraudulent links aimed at stealing money or personal and banking details. Authorities emphasize that they never contact citizens in this manner and urge people not to click suspicious links or disclose personal or banking information.
