Cyprus Presidency praised by EU leaders as term concludes

EU leaders and institutions lauded the Cyprus Presidency during the final European Council meeting, highlighting progress on high‑priority political files, the Multiannual Financial Framework, new air passenger rights and migration issues. President Nikos Christodoulides presented the results, and the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament noted the breadth of work completed.

Christodoulides also emphasized that the EU has the "most decisive role" in reviving negotiations on the Cyprus problem, linking this effort to the six‑month Council Presidency. He called for stronger EU support for United Nations‑led talks and urged the appointment of a new EU envoy after the previous envoy resigned. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman expressed openness to greater EU involvement, while noting limitations on the Republic of Cyprus acting as mediator. A United Nations envoy is scheduled to visit Brussels after contacts in Cyprus, Turkey and Greece.
