Cyprus President Christodoulides Defends Turkish Minister's Two-State Remarks

President Nicos Christodoulides told graduating students at the TEPAK ceremony in Limassol that he does not downplay Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s public statements advocating a two‑state solution for Cyprus. He said he has exchanged messages with UN Secretary‑General‑designated envoy Maria Olgin and was briefed on the meeting with Fidan, but will not disclose its details. Christodoulides reiterated the United Nations’ stance that the organization will not undertake initiatives beyond the limits of its charter, even as the UN chief’s position on the contested post‑1945 system is questioned. The president also referenced broader diplomatic outreach, including discussions on a U.S.–Iran agreement and contacts with Lebanon’s president, but emphasized that all parties will be judged by their positions and outcomes.
