Cyprus President Christodoulides laments parliament defeat of EU‑funds extension proposal

President Nicos Christodoulides told reporters at the Invest Cyprus International Investment Awards ceremony that he was "disappointed" by the House of Representatives' decision to reject the executive's request to extend the services of the Under‑Secretary for European Affairs for six months. The proposal, tied to the Multi‑annual Financial Framework, aimed to secure EU cohesion, agricultural, migration, defence and other funds for Cyprus over the next seven years.

Christodoulides criticised the leadership of the Democratic Party (DISY) and the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) for voting against the measure, describing it as an "anti‑European" stance, while thanking the parties that voted responsibly. He affirmed that the executive will find a way to ensure the Cypriot people benefit from the anticipated EU resources.
