Cyprus President Christodoulides says ‘turkodizonia’ contravenes EU principles

Over the past several days, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has repeatedly asserted that the proposed “turkodizonia” solution is fundamentally incompatible with the European Union’s principles, values and law. He stressed that any settlement for Cyprus must be fully compatible with EU standards, citing a joint letter from the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council. Christodoulides added that positive developments in Euro‑Turkish relations depend on substantive progress on the Cypriot issue, and noted that the United Nations Secretary‑General will visit the island. The statements followed a memorial ceremony on 15 July 2026 honoring those who fell for freedom and democracy, and critiqued proposals for a bi‑communal federation that do not meet EU criteria.
