Cyprus: President Christodoulides signals potential solution by year-end

Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides has indicated that a solution plan for the Cyprus dispute could potentially be reached by the end of the year. He noted a renewed momentum in negotiations following meetings between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Turkish President Erdoğan.

Christodoulides described a ‘window of opportunity’ provided by the UN leadership. However, tensions remain regarding the nature of the settlement. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, following discussions with UN Personal Envoy خانم Ángela Olsen, stated that the most ‘realistic solution’ involves the coexistence of two states on the island. Fidan emphasized that any process must recognize the ‘sovereign equality’ and ‘equal international status’ of Turkish Cypriots, based on realities on the ground.

In response, President Christodoulides acknowledged that a final solution may not be ‘absolutely fair,’ noting that a perfectly fair outcome would require restoring the situation to its pre-1974 state. He maintained that the priority must be a solution that is functional and sustainable.
