Cyprus President Christodoulides urges progress on island dispute in talks with EU leaders and Turkey

President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus spoke by phone with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, focusing on the recent dinner he held with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The discussions, according to government spokesperson Konstantinos Letypiatis, centered on advancing the Cyprus issue and on Turkey’s obligations under EU agreements.

Christodoulides also met with the leaders of three Cypriot parties – the Democratic Front, EDEK and the Greens – to inform them of the latest developments on the island. He emphasized that the meeting’s sole agenda was the Cyprus problem, with no talk of those parties joining the government. The EU’s position, reiterated by both the Commission and the Council, is that any progress in Turkey‑EU relations is linked to Turkey’s constructive willingness to address the Cyprus dispute.
