Cyprus President maintains window for reunification solution remains open

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has asserted that the window of opportunity for a reunification solution remains open, despite a lack of substantive progress. In a televised address marking the 66th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, Christodoulides emphasized his commitment to ending the occupation and reunifying the island, while noting that he would not pursue artificial progress merely to restart talks. He identified Turkish calls for a two-state solution as a primary obstacle to negotiations.

Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas reaffirmed Greece's unwavering support for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on UN Security Council resolutions. Meanwhile, at the 7th annual Cyprus Forum, political leaders discussed the island's future. DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos warned against any solution that would compromise the functionality of the state, while Cyprus Forum President Nikola Kyriakidis apologized for recent organizational issues that led to the withdrawal of some participants.

Government officials noted that the Greek Cypriot side is working on creative proposals regarding confidence-building measures and methodology. There is a push to share the UN's recording of past convergences with all parties before formal negotiations resume to facilitate a common understanding.
