Cyprus proposes 30-to-90-day seizure for electric scooter violations

A draft decree in Cyprus proposes the seizure of electric scooters for periods ranging from 30 to 90 days following specific violations. According to Harris Christodoulou, Executive Engineer of the Department of Public Works, the regulations target three main infractions: operating the device in unauthorized areas, use by individuals under the age of 17, and exceeding the legal speed limit of 25 km/h.

Police or authorized municipal officers may seize devices in addition to issuing fines. Owners may reclaim their scooters after 30 days upon payment of the fine, though failure to pay may result in the device being held until judicial proceedings are completed. A public consultation period for the draft decree is open until September 26 via the e-Consultation platform.

In parallel, the Nicosia Municipality, led by Mayor Charalambos Prountzos, is working to improve infrastructure by creating over 100 dedicated scooter parking spots and expanding 30 km/h speed zones to enhance road safety.
