Cyprus pushes diplomatic agenda at NATO summit and UN talks amid Turkey‑EU tensions

Cyprus is intensifying its diplomatic outreach as the NATO summit takes place in Ankara. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kompos said the government is in contact with summit participants to convey the Republic’s core positions, monitor developments and seek broader geopolitical support, even though Cyprus is not a NATO member.

At the same time, United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres is using the Cyprus issue as a focus for renewed high‑level mediation, aiming to restart talks that could pressure the Greek Cypriot side. The European Union and the United States are reported to view progress on Cyprus as a way to improve relations with Turkey, while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas recently visited Ankara, underscoring Turkey’s strategic importance to Europe. Cyprus officials anticipate a possible visit by UN senior envoy Maria‑Anne Olkin and continue to expand the island’s diplomatic footprint in the region.
