Cyprus resolves British base issue for Schengen membership
A major obstacle to the Republic of Cyprus joining the Schengen Area has been resolved regarding the British Sovereign Base Areas. The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the administration of the British bases have reached an agreement to upgrade operational controls at two specific crossing points to meet European Union standards.
This development has been confirmed by sources in Brussels, who expressed satisfaction with the consensus. The second primary hurdle for Cyprus's full Schengen membership involves the legal status of movement across the Green Line. The European Commission is currently consulting with Cypriot legal and foreign affairs departments to draft a proposal that would provide a clear legal framework for transit in this area.
