Cyprus talks: Government pledges push to restart negotiations

Deputy Government Spokesperson Giannis Antoniou told an anti‑occupation gathering in Latsia‑Geri that resolving the Cyprus issue remains the top priority of the President and the government. He said Greece and Cyprus are working to create conditions for the direct, UN‑backed talks aimed at a comprehensive settlement, citing the recent appointment of EU Vice‑President Rafael Fino as the European Union’s Special Envoy for Cyprus as evidence of heightened European interest.

Antoniou stressed the goal of evolving the Republic of Cyprus into a modern EU and UN member state that guarantees security and prosperity for all its lawful residents. He recalled the 1974 Turkish invasion and called for the end of the occupation, the liberation of the island and its reunification, urging continued political will from the UN Secretary‑General and the EU to achieve concrete results.
