Cyprus to debut Israeli Barak MX air defense system

The Cyprus National Guard is set to publicly debut the Israeli-made Barak MX air defense system during a military parade on October 1, marking the anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus's Independence Day. Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the Barak MX is a multi-layered system capable of intercepting a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, with engagement ranges between 15 and 150 kilometers.

Recent footage confirms the system is now fully deployed and operational on the island. The acquisition, which was initially conducted under high secrecy, represents a significant upgrade to Cyprus's air defense capabilities.

Furthermore, discussions between Cypriot Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas and Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias have focused on the interoperability of air defense systems between Cyprus and Greece. Integrating the Barak MX with Greek defense frameworks, such as the 'Achilles Shield' program, could provide a unified operational picture of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea through shared command and control (C2) systems.
