Israeli defense industry expansion in Cyprus

Israeli defense companies are seeking to expand their industrial presence in Cyprus to gain access to European Union financing. Major contractors, such as Elbit Systems, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, are exploring the establishment of manufacturing plants and management offices on the island. This strategy is intended to help these firms qualify for the EU’s €150 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, which requires that a significant portion of defense system value originates from EU member states or Ukraine.

Parallel to these industrial discussions, Cyprus has moved forward with the deployment of Israeli military technology. The Cyprus National Guard is scheduled to debut the Barak MX air defense system, developed by IAI, during a military parade on October 1. The system, which is now reportedly operational on the island, is capable of intercepting various aerial threats including UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Efforts are also underway to integrate these new capabilities with regional partners. Discussions between Cypriot and Greek defense officials have focused on the interoperability of air defense systems, aiming to link the Barak MX with Greek frameworks to create a unified operational picture in the Eastern Mediterranean.
