Cyprus to implement four new desalination units

Cyprus is proceeding with the implementation of four new permanent desalination units following a Council of Ministers decision. The plants, located in East Limassol, Agia Thekla, Polis Chrysochous, and Dekelia, will have a combined daily capacity of 180,000 cubic meters of water.

Minister of Agriculture, Rural and Environment Christos Senekis stated that the initiative aims to reduce dependence on rainfall and enhance water security. Between 2024 and 2030, a project program exceeding 200 million euros is being implemented, covering desalination, water recovery, loss reduction, and network upgrades.

Additionally, the Ministry is working toward a sustainable and competitive agricultural sector supported by the 2023–2027 Common Agricultural Policy, which has total funding of 454 million euros. To support farmers, a new financial tool has been developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance and banking institutions to facilitate access to credit on more favorable terms.
