Egypt desalination project development

Overview

Egypt is exploring a large-scale desalination initiative in discussions with Hydrovolta. The proposed project aims for a daily capacity of 10 million cubic metres by 2050, potentially utilizing existing power plant infrastructure.

The project involves the use of SonixED technology, which integrates electrodialysis with ultrasound to reduce energy consumption and chemical requirements. A primary goal of the initiative is the extraction of commercial minerals and chemicals, such as magnesium hydroxide and sodium chloride, from desalination residue to decrease national reliance on imports.

Phased implementation is being considered, with an initial target of 3.35 million cubic metres daily. To manage long-term costs, officials are investigating the integration of solar and wind energy into the process to support sustainable water management and coastal development.
