Cyprus Transport Committee warns of rising scooter and e-bike risks

The Parliamentary Transport Committee and state services in Cyprus have expressed serious concern regarding the rising number of incidents involving personal mobility devices, such as electric scooters and e-bikes. Data presented to the committee shows a geometric increase in complaints over the last three years, with 5,141 complaints recorded in the first eight months of the current year, compared to 2,499 in 2024 and 2,766 in 2025.

Accidents involving these devices have resulted in multiple casualties. Recent statistics indicate four serious injuries, three minor injuries, and two deaths, with a significant number of incidents occurring in Limassol.

Lawmakers are debating various solutions, including stricter legislative oversight, the creation of dedicated infrastructure, or even potential bans on certain devices. The Cyprus Police suggested that the solution lies in providing adequate spaces and alternative routes for these users rather than mandatory registration, emphasizing the need for cooperation with local authorities to improve infrastructure.
