Cyprus weather shifts amid seasonal mental health concerns
Weather patterns in Cyprus are currently influenced by a weak low-pressure system, bringing increased cloud cover and scattered rain to the northeastern coasts, mountainous areas, and western regions. Temperatures are expected to remain around 25 degrees Celsius in inland and coastal areas, while higher elevations will see temperatures near 14 degrees Celsius. Clearer skies are anticipated from Sunday through Tuesday, though temperatures are expected to remain below seasonal averages.
Seasonal changes and reduced daylight are also linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression that typically occurs during autumn and winter months. According to the Mayo Clinic and the NHS, SAD can cause persistent sadness, fatigue, and loss of interest in activities. Scientists suggest that decreased exposure to natural light may disrupt biological rhythms and affect the production of serotonin and melatonin, which regulate mood and sleep.
