President Cyril Ramaphosa faces impeachment summons and police corruption probe
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is confronting two parallel parliamentary processes. An impeachment committee has obtained a legal opinion confirming it can summon the president to testify if he declines a voluntary invitation, and it has voted to appoint Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as evidence leader. The committee also agreed that Ramaphosa will not be the first witness and will first establish a case before inviting him.
Ramaphosa has filed papers in the Constitutional Court opposing a direct‑access appeal by the impeachment committee and other parties seeking to overturn a Western Cape High Court interdict that halted public hearings into the Phala Phala farm scandal. He argues the appeal should follow the ordinary judicial route.
Separately, the Madlanga Commission’s second interim report recommended disciplinary and criminal proceedings against suspended deputy police commissioner Lt‑Gen Shadrack Sibiya, Witness G, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi and businessman Brown Mogotsi, and called for an investigation into an off‑the‑books Crime Intelligence operation. President Ramaphosa ordered a criminal investigation into Sibiya and the other individuals based on the commission’s findings.
