Czech actress and Texas retiree struggle with inadequate pensions

Jaroslava Obermaierová, a veteran Czech actress best known for her role as Vilma Nyklová in the long‑running series "Ulice," disclosed that after more than five decades of work she receives only a few hundred euros a month in pension. The meager amount is a result of historic pension rules that let freelancers in the arts skip paying social insurance for three years, which severely limited the contributions used to calculate her benefits.

In the United States, 64‑year‑old Terry Robinson from Texas chose to spend his retirement in a Holiday Inn rather than a senior‑care facility. He calculated that a hotel room costs about $60 per night versus $188 per day in a nursing home, saving roughly $128 each day, which he can use for food, hobbies and other expenses. His long‑term hotel arrangement illustrates how some seniors are seeking cheaper alternatives to traditional senior housing.
