Czech pension reforms advance despite legal dispute

Overview

In late May 2026 the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs rolled out new early‑retirement rules, an earnings estimator and a one‑off sign‑up bonus to address low payouts caused by undocumented work and contribution gaps. Subsequent July measures refined regional retirement bonuses and retained age‑based increments for work after pension age. By 18 July the Czech Social Security Administration reported that monthly early‑retirement applications had roughly doubled year‑on‑year, reflecting softened reductions for long‑term contributors.

On 19 July the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš approved a further reform package. It introduces a monthly bonus of CZK 500 at ages 80, 85, 90 and 95, and CZK 1 000 at age 100, adds a supplement for retirees who continue working, and removes the previously planned increase in the pension‑indexation formula together with the cap on retirement age at 65. The Ministry of Labour estimates the changes will affect about 433 000 pensioners and cost roughly CZK 2.6 billion per year. The approval occurs amid a constitutional dispute with President Petr Pavel over his participation in a NATO summit, which the justice minister has criticised as a precedent‑breaking court intervention.
