Šumava National Park chemical contamination triggers criminal investigation

Police have launched a criminal investigation into the discovery of massive chemical contamination in the Šumava National Park. The site, located in the former Dobrá Voda military area near Klatovy, contains approximately 1,000 tons of contaminated soil and 200 barrels of hazardous chemicals, including mercury, arsenic, dioxin, and furan. Authorities are investigating potential charges of public endangerment due to negligence and environmental damage.

The Czech Army has been tasked with conducting initial engineering and chemical surveys of the area. While the military will lead the reconnaissance and coordination, officials noted that specialized private firms will eventually be required for the actual removal, transport, and disposal of the toxic materials. The Šumava National Park administration is assisting by preparing access routes and clearing necessary vegetation.

Local officials and representatives from nearby municipalities, such as Prášily and Hartmanice, have expressed concerns regarding a lack of timely information. Some reports suggest the presence of these substances may have been known for several years without adequate public warning. The remediation process is expected to involve significant coordination between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of the Environment.
