Chemical contamination in Šumava National Park

Overview

A major ecological crisis has been identified in the Šumava National Park at the former Dobrá Voda military site, involving approximately 1,000 tons of contaminated soil and 200 barrels of highly toxic chemicals. These substances, including mercury, arsenic, dioxins, furans, and chlorinated solvents, are remnants of the former Czechoslovak army and have been leaking into the soil for roughly three years.

The contamination was first brought to light following a bunker ceiling collapse in autumn 2020, which revealed rusted drums and concentrated chromic acid. While laboratory tests did not confirm the presence of chemical warfare agents like mustard gas, officials warned that a fire could cause the chemicals to react and form a gas “similar to phosgene.”

Following geophysical surveys in 2023 that identified further underground pits, a large-scale remediation project has been organized. The cleanup, estimated to cost nearly 192 million CZK, is scheduled to begin in late September and continue until June 2028. Although the contamination poses a significant risk to groundwater, officials noted the affected areas are away from primary tourist routes.
