Czech cattle farmers face herd reductions due to drought

Drought conditions have led to a shortage of bulk fodder, prompting cattle farmers to consider reducing herd sizes. While a higher supply of beef might temporarily lower consumer prices, this trend poses significant risks to farmers facing rising costs for feed, labor, and fuel.

Reducing livestock numbers carries broader environmental implications. Fewer animals mean a decrease in manure, which serves as a vital organic fertilizer to enrich soil and improve water retention. This reduction could exacerbate drought risks and increase reliance on expensive industrial fertilizers, particularly amidst geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Additionally, grazing helps mitigate wildfire risks by managing vegetation.
