Czech cities Brno and Jihlava launch roadworks and new traffic islands, prompting detours and safety concerns

In Brno, reconstruction of Benešova Street began on 8 June, converting a steam‑pipe corridor into a hot‑water line. The main traffic lane near the bus station was closed, forcing cars to travel on the sidewalk while a protected pedestrian corridor was created. The works, which also involve relocating bus stops for lines 47 and 49, are scheduled to continue until mid‑October.

In Jihlava, a newly installed protective island on the Romana Havelky crossing caused two accidents within days of its completion. The first collision involved a car that struck the island without injuries; the second involved a motorcyclist who suffered minor bruises after hitting the island. City officials defended the measure, noting it has the necessary approvals and is intended to improve pedestrian safety, and said the situation will continue to be monitored.
