Czech citizens increasingly turn to AI for mental health support
Recent studies and surveys in the Czech Republic reveal a growing trend of individuals using artificial intelligence to manage mental health and emotional issues. According to the HBSC 2026 study by Palacký University, one-third of adolescents used AI for advice or information regarding mental health and emotions within the last 30 days. Among teenagers, nearly half use AI for schoolwork, but a significant portion—including 21% who consult chatbots weekly about moods—seek emotional support or help with loneliness.
Data from PAQ Research indicates that one-third of adults have also used AI to consult on mental health concerns in the past month. While many use these tools to manage stress or understand psychological difficulties, experts warn of significant risks. Approximately 13% of respondents reported delaying professional medical help due to AI interactions, 10% received advice different from their doctors, and 8% changed their medication usage based on AI recommendations.
In response, the Czech Ministry of Health is developing guidelines for the safe use of AI in mental health, a project expected to continue through 2028. Officials emphasize that while AI can assist in information gathering, it must not replace professional medical care or jeopardize patient privacy.
