Czech drivers show potential for EV transition despite market lag
A joint survey by E.ON and Volkswagen reveals that 40.9% of active drivers in the Czech Republic could transition to electric vehicles (EVs) without significant lifestyle changes. Despite this potential, the Czech EV market continues to lag behind the European Union average; while battery electric vehicles accounted for 20.7% of new registrations in the EU, they represented only 6.65% in the Czech Republic.
The study, which utilized data collected by Ipsos, highlights a gap between perception and reality. While only 14% of respondents have personal experience driving an EV, 73% expressed interest in trying one, and only 6% are strictly opposed to the technology. Barriers to adoption are largely driven by concerns regarding range (52%) and charging availability (41%), though many of these fears are based on misconceptions rather than actual driving habits.
Drivers with direct experience reported high satisfaction, frequently citing quiet operation (68%) and smooth, dynamic driving (60%) as key benefits. Currently, there are approximately 100,000 electric vehicles on Czech roads, with registration numbers showing year-on-year growth.
