Czech Republic commemorates Václav Havel’s 90th anniversary

Various cultural and educational institutions across the Czech Republic are organizing events to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Václav Havel’s birth. The celebrations, part of the ‘Havel 90’ project, aim to honor the first Czech president’s legacy as a statesman, dissident, and dramatist.

Major highlights include the ‘Havel ALIVE!’ festival at Prague Castle, running from October 2026 to January 2027, featuring theater, music, and design exhibitions. The Signal Festival will host multimedia installations inspired by his essay ‘The Power of the Powerless’. Additionally, Czech Radio is planning special broadcasts, including a revival of the ‘Conversations from Lány’ format.

Regional activities include theater productions in Pardubice and Nový Bor, outdoor photography exhibitions, and educational programs at Mendel Grammar School in Opava. The commemorations emphasize Havel’s human values, such as truth, responsibility, and respect, through diverse mediums including film, literature, and public discussions.
