Václav Havel 90th anniversary commemorations

Overview

Commemorations continue across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria to honor the legacy of former President Václav Havel on the 90th anniversary of his birth. The ‘Havel 90’ project includes diverse cultural, educational, and regional activities.

In Prague, the Havel ALIVE festival at Prague Castle features music and public debates, while the National Theatre’s Laterna magika presents ‘Perpetuum Havel’, a movement theater piece depicting the experience of a prisoner. The Czech News Agency (ČTK) has also launched the ‘Foto ČTK: Havel’ photography exhibition at the Fragment Gallery, showcasing reportage photography from his life as a dissident and statesman.

Regional tributes include the planting of 90 trees in Jihlava, an outdoor exhibition in Ostrava highlighting Havel’s local historical links, and artistic projects in Plzeň and Pardubice. In Jemniště, a ‘Václav Havel Bench’ was unveiled as part of a global initiative to encourage public dialogue.

Institutional and media tributes include radio projects by Czech Radio featuring unreleased recordings and the Vize 97 Foundation’s organization of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. Internationally, the Vienna City Council has decided to name a bridge—potentially the Salzach Bridge—after Havel, fulfilling a 15-year-old promise, despite opposition from the FPÖ party regarding his past political stances.
