Regional courts issue sentences in several child abuse and neglect cases

Several regional courts in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have issued sentences in high-profile cases involving child abuse and neglect.

In Slovakia, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced a deaf woman to 19 years in a high-security prison for the premeditated murder of her two daughters, aged two and five. The woman admitted to drowning the children in a bathtub before setting fire to their apartment in Bratislava. She claimed she acted to protect them from their father, though the father denied these allegations.

In the Czech Republic, the Ústí nad Labem Regional Court sentenced a 26-year-old man to 17 years in prison for the brutal murder of his two-and-a-half-year-old son in Drahomyšle. The defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time, admitted to the crime. The child died from severe head and neck injuries.

Additionally, the Regional Court in Brno sentenced parents for the death of a newborn in February 2024. The mother received eight years and the father six years for the neglect of the infant, who died from infection after the parents failed to provide proper nutrition, hygiene, or medical care.
