Child abuse sentencing in Central Europe

Overview

Legal proceedings in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have resulted in prison sentences for individuals convicted of fatal violence or neglect against young children.

In Hungary, a Debrecen Court sentenced a foster mother to seven years and six months for the manslaughter of a two-year-old boy in Polgár. The court found that the woman, who had begun fostering children in December 2022, stomped on the child’s chest after he resisted being led into a house in February 2023. While the defense argued the injuries were caused by an accidental fall, the woman also received an eight-year ban from public affairs and a permanent prohibition from occupations involving the supervision of minors. The Debrecen Appellate Prosecution Office has appealed for a more severe 13-year sentence.

In the Czech Republic, the Ústí nad Labem Regional Court sentenced a 26-year-old man to 17 years in prison for the murder of his toddler son in Drahomyšle. The defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, admitted to the March 2024 assault that caused fatal head and neck injuries. Separately, a court in Brno sentenced a mother to eight years and a father to six years for the neglect of a newborn who died in February 2024 due to a lack of nutrition, hygiene, and medical care.

In Slovakia, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced a deaf woman to 19 years in a high-security prison for the premeditated murder of her two daughters, aged two and five, in Bratislava. The woman admitted to drowning the children in a bathtub and setting fire to their apartment, claiming she acted to protect them from their father.
