Czech municipalities recognized for low municipal waste production

The 12th annual Odpadový Oskar competition, organized by the non-profit Arnika, has highlighted municipalities in the Czech Republic with the most efficient waste management. The awards recognize towns and villages that produce less than 150 kilograms of mixed municipal waste per inhabitant annually, signaling high recycling rates and effective public communication.

In the category of cities with over 5,000 inhabitants, Fulnek produced the least waste at 102.3 kg per person. In the Hradec Králové region, Kostelec nad Orlicí led with 110.6 kg per inhabitant, achieving a 16 percent year-on-year reduction by adjusting collection frequencies and implementing door-to-door pickup for recyclables.

Among smaller municipalities, Chvalšiny (1,000–5,000 inhabitants) recorded 51.7 kg per person, while Stéblová (under 1,000 inhabitants) produced the lowest amount at 42.9 kg per person. Additionally, Nový Bydžov and Nedachlebicím were recognized for their consistent long-term improvements in waste management practices.
