Czech officials evaluate tunnel projects for Prague bypass and Prague‑Beroun railway

The Dolní Chabry district in Prague is urging the Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) to take over design of a planned 1.2‑km bypass road tunnel. Mayor Kateřina Šilhová Šafránková told ČTK, “If we are going to build it, we want the road in a tunnel so that a reasonable space can be created above it.” Prague city officials are negotiating the transfer of the project to ŘSD, which is also responsible for the Prague ring road construction.

In a separate rail initiative, local officials in Beroun express concerns about a new Prague‑Beroun railway tunnel. Deputy Mayor Michal Mišina said, “The biggest concern we have is the impact on life in Beroun – permanent noise and emissions.” The survey is being run by Správa železnic, which has begun geotechnical investigations. The tunnel is estimated to cost about 90 billion CZK, with excavation expected between 2031 and 2033, and aims to cut travel time to roughly 18 minutes, offering a faster link to Prague.

Both projects are part of broader Czech transport planning, balancing improved connectivity with local environmental and community impacts.
