Czech Parliament approves budget amendment permitting up to 10% higher spending

The Chamber of Deputies (Sněmovna) voted 101‑to‑?? to adopt the coalition’s version of a budget amendment, overturning the Senate’s proposed conditions. The law lets the government exceed the approved budget ceiling by up to ten percent – roughly 240 billion CZK – in a security crisis, extend the authority to raise defence spending until 2036, and increase spending on strategic infrastructure.

Finance Minister Alena Schillerová defended the changes, saying Senate‑imposed limits would create legal uncertainty. Opposition parties warned the amendment could lead to unchecked debt growth and announced plans to lodge a constitutional complaint. The bill is now headed to the president for signature.
