Czech pensions, parental grant & senior care costs
Entities: Czech Senate · Petr Pavel · Daniel Herman · President Petr Pavel · Czech Television
Overview
The 2026 overhaul of Czech pensions, tax and education continues to generate political pressure. From 1 August 2026 seniors aged 80‑85 who keep working or receive the minimum pension will receive extra credits, including a fixed 1 000 CZK boost for those turning 85. Parental support was expanded on 6 July 2026 when the lower house voted overwhelmingly to raise the standard allowance by 50 000 CZK, reaching 400 000 CZK per month for children born after 1 January 2027, with a doubled payment of 700 000 CZK for twins or multiple births. The government estimates the first‑year cost at about 230 million CZK, climbing to roughly 3.6 billion CZK annually by 2030 as the scheme phases in. All opposition proposals for automatic inflation‑linked indexation, minimum‑wage linkage, or extended paternal leave were rejected. On 7 July 2026 the Chamber of Deputies voted 101‑to‑? to adopt the coalition’s budget amendment, overturning the Senate’s conditions. The law lets the government exceed the approved budget ceiling by up to 10 % – roughly 240 billion CZK – in a security crisis, extends the authority to raise defence spending until 2036 and adds funding for strategic infrastructure. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová defended the change; opposition parties warned of unchecked debt growth and announced a constitutional complaint. The bill now proceeds to the president for signature. On 8 July 2026 the Chamber rejected proposals to automatically raise the parental allowance in line with inflation or to tie it to the minimum wage, citing a potential cost of up to 7.3 billion CZK in the next year. The legislation retains the current eligibility condition limiting preschool attendance to a maximum of 120 hours per month for children under two years. Later in July, the government introduced additional measures affecting self‑employed persons and older employees.
