Czech pharmacists seek legal reform for emergency medication dispensing

Pharmacists in the Czech Republic are calling for legislative changes to allow for the emergency dispensing of medications. Currently, strict laws prevent pharmacists from issuing prescription drugs even when a patient's medical history is visible in their digital records, provided a valid e-prescription is not immediately available.

This issue frequently affects chronically ill patients when their treating physician is unavailable due to illness, vacation, or other emergencies. Pharmacists argue that the lack of an 'extraordinary dispensing' mechanism forces patients to seek help from overburdened hospital emergency departments, creating unnecessary strain on the healthcare system. Proponents suggest that allowing short-term medication bridging for stable patients with chronic conditions, such as heart or metabolic disorders, would ensure continuity of care without requiring pharmacists to perform diagnostic roles.
