Czech Republic pharmacy legislative reforms

In the Czech Republic, healthcare professionals and government bodies are pursuing legislative reforms to expand the role of pharmacists within the medical system.

Initially, pharmacists advocated for legal changes to permit the emergency dispensing of medications. They argued that current laws prevent the issuance of prescription drugs even when a patient’s digital medical history is accessible, provided a valid e-prescription is not immediately available. Proponents suggested that allowing short-term medication bridging for stable patients with chronic conditions would prevent unnecessary strain on hospital emergency departments.

Following these discussions, the Czech Ministry of Health proposed a legislative amendment to allow trained pharmacists to administer certain vaccinations, including those for influenza and COVID-19. This initiative aims to increase vaccination rates by improving accessibility. The proposal has received support from twelve medical professional societies and the National Association of Patient Organizations (NAPO). Under the proposed rules, pharmacists would be required to undergo specific training and meet technical requirements to provide these services.
