Czech police tighten crackdown on dangerous drivers after high‑speed chase and extreme speed violations

On 22 June 2026, police in the Czech border town of Šluknov attempted to stop a driver who ignored a stop command, fled toward the German border at speeds exceeding 140 km/h and later up to 180 km/h, and collided head‑on with a police vehicle. Both police officers and the driver were injured; one officer required serious medical care. The driver, who was under a driving ban, was arrested, tested for drugs with a preliminary indication of methamphetamine, and charged with aggravated assault on a public official, among other offences, facing up to 12 years in prison.

In a separate recent operation, Prague highway police measured two motorists travelling at 209 km/h and 218 km/h, far above the legal limit, and stopped a third driver who was using a mobile phone on the steering wheel for about 40 seconds while driving. The offending drivers were fined, had their licences temporarily seized, and received penalty points.

Both incidents underscore intensified police efforts to curb reckless and illegal driving on Czech roads.
