Czech political disputes emerge over military travel and foreign policy reports

Political tensions are rising in the Czech Republic following two separate disputes involving high-ranking officials and foreign policy coordination.

Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna defended the decision to cancel Chief of the General Staff Miroslav Hlaváč’s trip to the YES security conference in Kyiv. While Zůna cited urgent domestic duties, including the 2027 military budget and NATO preparations, reports suggest the trip was effectively blocked because the Ministry failed to provide the necessary signatures in time. This led to a confrontation with journalists who argued that preventing the new Chief of Staff from establishing personal contact with allies during an active conflict undermines national security.

Simultaneously, President Petr Pavel is reportedly facing delays in receiving documentation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Speaker Tomio Okamura’s recent visit to China. Foreign Minister Macinka has resisted providing the requested materials to the President, arguing that the information was personally prepared for the Speaker and that third-party access should require Okamura’s explicit consent. The President’s office has been waiting for these reports for approximately six weeks.
