Czech political disputes over defense and foreign policy

Political tensions have emerged in the Czech Republic regarding defense and foreign policy decisions. Initially, Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna faced criticism from within Parliament over a planned trip to the Beijing Xiangshan Forum. Former Defence Minister Jana Černochová warned that the forum acts as a platform for “Chinese military diplomacy and propaganda,” suggesting that a sitting minister’s attendance would send a “potentially problematic political signal.”

Subsequent disputes have centered on military travel and inter-departmental coordination. Minister Zůna defended the cancellation of Chief of the General Staff Miroslav Hlaváč’s trip to a security conference in Kyiv, citing domestic duties such as NATO preparations and the 2027 military budget. However, reports indicated the trip was blocked due to a failure to provide necessary signatures.

Additionally, President Petr Pavel has faced delays in receiving documentation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning Speaker Tomio Okamura’s visit to China. Foreign Minister Macinka has resisted releasing these materials, stating that the information was prepared specifically for the Speaker and requires his explicit consent.
