Czech railways launch summer heritage tours as classic 'koženky' trains retire

The Krkonošské railway network began its summer season with a historic steam locomotive, Sedma, departing from Martinice. Visitors can explore the unique Martinice station, enjoy a children’s workshop, and ride nostalgic steam and historic motor trains on the Zubačka line. Every Saturday in Žacléř, motorised draisines run to Lampertice and onward to Královec, offering a different perspective on the region’s rail heritage. The weekend program continues on 25 July, 8 August and 22 August, with themed events such as Fairy‑tale, Model and blueberry Saturdays.

At the same time, Czech Railways announced the removal of the long‑running B249 and A149 “koženky” fast‑train sets from regular service on the Třebíč‑Brno line. The units will remain only as reserve equipment for emergencies, with fewer than 150 of the UIC‑Y/B 70 series still operational and only about forty B249 cars in use. Full retirement is planned as newer trainsets replace them.

Both developments reflect a shift in Czech rail operations toward promoting heritage tourism while phasing out ageing rolling stock.
