Czech Republic advances major railway upgrades in Jihlava and Kolín

A new multimodal railway terminal opened in Jihlava, featuring a combined train, bus and tram station, a 68‑space P+R garage and a public square. The project cost about 1.5 billion CZK, with roughly 85 % financed by European Union funds, and the railway works were awarded to Skanska. The facility is designed for future expansion into a full transport hub by 2030, including additional bus platforms and road links.

Separately, the Czech rail agency received a non‑final construction permit to modernise the line between Kolín and Kutná Hora. A consortium of Strabag, Eurovia and České dráhy Praha won the 1.656 billion CZK contract. The upgrade will raise the line’s maximum speed from 120 km/h to 160 km/h, add a new Hlízov junction to eliminate crossing conflicts, and improve stations with new shelters, bike racks and CCTV. Funding will come from an European Investment Bank loan and the work will prepare the corridor for future mixed‑current electrification.
